Unfortunately time constraints (i.e my day job) keep getting in the way of me updating this site so all I’ve been able to do so far for the Darlington Nickname page is a very basic bit of background.
I’ve shown below a football cigarette card from the Ogdens AFC Nicknames series that shows a caricature that depicts a “Quaker”, which of course is Darlos nickname !!

The text on the back of the card reads;
“The Friends Meeting Houses at Darlington were among the first in the country, and with strong Quaker interest locally the team has been dubbed the “Quakers”.The club has a history that goes back more than fifty years and while no outstanding success has been achieved, probably owing to the limited public support which is found in the district, it has been a valuable nursery for talented players. Becoming a professional organisation, Darlington joined the Third Division of the League and won promotion in 1925. Its position in the Second Division however, was held only for two seasons”.
So, that’s all I’ve done so far and actually being from Darlo myself I’m embarrassed I haven’t been able to do more on this page yet but don’t worry I will be coming back to this page to expand on this particular football nickname a bit more !!
I do have loads of Darlington football memorabilia for sale in my Ebay shop if you would like to check it out here – https://ebay.us/uymNiv
